About the museum
The Fasenickl is a Fastnacht (carnival) figure from the area around Kipfenberg, Kinding and Enkering. It stands out for an elaborate costume and fixed ritual customs: the cracking of whips (Schnalzen), Faseln (nonsense speeches) and the handing out of pretzels and sweets. Related figures exist in southern Franconia and southwestern Upper Palatinate; the Fasenickl is regarded as one of the central figures of the old Franconian Fastnacht.
The cultural association "Die Fasenickl" has set up the museum in the former gatekeeper's house in the village center, near the market square. The oldest building fabric of the house dates from the Middle Ages. The association wants to preserve the surviving historic costumes, show them to the public, and demonstrate the Fasenickl procession outside the carnival season.
The custom is documented as far back as the 18th century; the oldest exhibits date from around 1800. There are three explanations for its origin: emergence during the plague years, development from medieval carnival revelry, or roots in pre-Christian times.
