About the museum
The origins go back to the 15th century: around 1450 the princely brewhouse was built at the foot of the Hirschberg. In painstaking manual labor, the brewers cut storage cellars into the sandy rock so the beer would stay cool even in summer. The cellar served the former prince-bishop's brewhouse of Eichstätt as a cold cellar and was expanded over the centuries.
Today the labyrinth consists of four main passages, a cross passage and 21 side chambers, together about 350 meters long and more than a thousand square meters in area. After the Brauerei Hirschberg ceased operations in 1980, the rock cellar was converted into a museum.
The passages display equipment once used to harvest raw materials, brew beer and fill bottles; it recalls the roughly 500-year brewing tradition of the house. The museum belongs to the business units of J. B. Prinstner GmbH & Co. KG.
