About the museum
The Archäologie Museum Greding is located on the Marktplatz in the center of town. The building with its stepped gable dates in its core from the 17th century and was long an inn with a brewery, later the "Hirschwirtshaus" of a postmaster. After the district bought it in 1962, it served as a nursing home, hotel and administrative building. It has been used as a museum since 1992; initially a local history collection under the name "Museum Natur und Mensch" displayed its holdings there.
After a thorough renovation, today's Archäologie Museum opened in 2012 in three stages: first the inner courtyard with the princely grave, in 2014 the rooms on cemeteries and the early Middle Ages, and then the prehistoric rooms. The basis is the finds from the excavations near Großhöbing, made during the construction of the ICE line and a long-distance water pipeline, as well as finds from the Greding industrial area.
The centerpiece is the Höbinger princely grave: a reconstruction of a burial around 700 AD, in which a clan leader and four companions were laid to rest together, apparently having died violently. Scientifically based facial reconstructions give some of the people their faces back. The rooms cover the period from the Ice Age to the High Middle Ages and include hunter-gatherers, the Neolithic, the Bronze and Iron Ages, the cemetery, disease marks on skeletons, mills on the Schwarzach and transport history.
