About the museum

The Hordorf volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1874 and over the decades preserved a remarkable number of historic equipment items. In 1989 this became the fire brigade museum in the old fire station on Brunnenplatz, whose ensemble of a pump house and the hose tower built in 1938 is itself of museum quality. The hose tower is one of the few surviving ones in the Wolfenbüttel district.

The museum traces the development of rural firefighting and deliberately shows only vehicles and equipment that actually served in small village fire brigades. The oldest piece is a leather fire bucket from 1868. The collection also includes trailer-mounted fire pumps with pumps from 1936 to 1968, tractor units such as a Lanz Bulldog from 1931 and a Hanomag from 1959, and an LF 8 fire engine from 1954 on an Opel Blitz chassis.

Uniforms from various decades, including the complete outfit of the captain from the founding period, with a leather helmet and a red horsehair plume, as well as nozzles, breathing apparatus, signal horns, helmets, pictures and documents complete the collection. The museum is financed by contributions from fire brigade members and by donations.
