About the museum
Wilhelm Raabe (1831–1910) moved to Braunschweig in 1870 and lived there until his death. From 1901 his last rented apartment was at Leonhardstraße 29a, a house built in 1898/99 in the Krähenfeld district. After the death of his wife, his daughter Margarethe managed the estate from the apartment.
During an air raid in April 1944 the house was heavily damaged; Margarethe Raabe had previously secured the library, manuscripts, drawings and the study furniture. After restoration, the city of Braunschweig opened the Raabe-Gedächtnisstätte (Raabe memorial site) here on September 8, 1948; today's Raabe-Haus:Literaturzentrum is on the second floor.
The exhibition shows the authentically preserved study with standing desk and a private library of around 1,800 volumes, along with rooms on Raabe as a writer, as a draftsman and as a private person. Original manuscripts, diaries, letters and some 500 surviving watercolors and drawings belong to the municipal holdings; individual manuscripts are on loan. At the same time the house is a literary center, with readings, the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize and projects for children and young people.
