About the museum
The Zisterziensermuseum is located in the gatehouse of the former Riddagshausen monastery on the east side of Braunschweig. The monastery was founded in the 12th century; in 1146 Henry the Lion gave the village of Riddagshausen with its land to the community then being established. Over the centuries the complex was repeatedly devastated by the people of Braunschweig, especially in 1542 and 1606, and it was dissolved during the Reformation. Part of the medieval monastery complex survives, including the monastery church.
In 13 rooms, the museum presents the development of the Cistercian order from its beginnings to the present. It covers the history, economic history, culture and art of the Cistercians in general and using Riddagshausen as an example. Information panels, sound-slide shows and videos are complemented by numerous originals, including a charter of Henry the Lion. At the gate arch, a figure of the talking monk greets visitors.
