About the museum
The museum was founded in 1984 on the initiative of Braunschweig photographers who wanted to create a place for engaging with photographic images. To this day it is run by a nonprofit association with well over a hundred members; the city, the state, and foundations support its work. Its first directors included Ute Karen Seggelke and Hartmut Rosen, and Barbara Hofmann-Johnson has led the museum since 2016.
The exhibition spaces are the two former gatehouses on Helmstedter Straße, built around 1800 to designs by the architect Peter Joseph Krahe on the edge of Braunschweig's ramparts. They stand right next to the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum.
The collection ranges from early 19th-century processes such as daguerreotypes, albumen prints, and autochromes to international contemporary photography. A particular focus is on photographers' estates, above all that of the Braunschweig photography pioneer Käthe Buchler (1876–1930), held by the museum since 2003 and comprising around a thousand glass negatives and numerous autochromes. These are joined by the estates of Hans Steffens and Nikolaus Geyer.
Alongside changing exhibitions of contemporary work, the museum has for many years presented the winners of the Wüstenrot Stiftung's Förderpreis Dokumentarfotografie (documentary photography award) and offers workshops for children and schools.
