About the museum
The Schleswig-Holstein Fire Brigade Museum opened in 1990 on the former Lüdemann farm on Friedrichsgaber Weg in Norderstedt. It is run and looked after by the support association Förderverein Feuerwehrmuseum Hof Lüdemann e.V.; many areas, such as the library and the image database, are maintained by volunteers. On the same site is the Norderstedt City Museum, which can be visited with the same admission ticket.
The permanent exhibition extends across the old farmhouse and several halls, including the Plambeck Hall, the Spender Hall and the Bolko Hartmann Remise, covering a total of around 2,300 square metres. Among the oldest items is a Baroque hand-operated pressure pump from Fulda dated 1754; also on display are the Altona steam fire engine “Alte Liese” from 1869, a Magirus turntable ladder from Itzehoe from 1927 and a fire engine based on the Opel Blitz from 1939 that is still roadworthy. Toy fire engines, model railways and a room with around 50 historic uniforms complete the exhibition.
Since 1992 the museum has held special exhibitions every year, mostly in the first half of the year. A reference library with over 15,000 titles on fire protection and firefighting is open to researchers by appointment. Fixed events in the annual calendar are the Norderstedt Museum Festival in May, the lantern parade in November and an artisan Christmas market on the third weekend of Advent.
