About the museum

The Heimat- und Museumsverein Ellerau was founded in 1988 to document the history of the town with exhibits and preserve it for posterity. The museum bears the name of its co-initiator Karl Rautenberg; the municipality of Ellerau contributed to the financing and continues to support the work. It sees itself as an institution that is never finished and shows its collections anew again and again.

On roughly 450 square meters of exhibition space, the displays focus on rural life: fully furnished living spaces from around 1900, farm tools and household implements, and tools of the shoemaker, tailor, blacksmith, carpenter, bricklayer and butcher. A historic school class with benches and slate boards recalls school days of the past. A separate display honors the former company Arthur A. Erlhoff, which became known across Europe after 1945 for women's outerwear.

Among the special pieces are a barn beam (Tennenbalken) more than 600 years old from the Ellerauer Hof Ohrt, a minute book of the Gut Kaden estate with entries from 1710 to 1742, a wedding chest from the 17th century, and a hand loom about 250 years old that still works. The volunteers supplement the permanent exhibition with changing thematic displays.
