Wald-, Holz- und Flößermuseum
Small museum in the old railway gatekeeper's house on the Kinzig in Gengenbach on rafting, forests and the timber trade in the Kinzig valley.
About the museum
The impetus was Gengenbach's 750th town anniversary in 1980, when the Flößergilde Schwaibach (Schwaibach rafters' guild) recalled the once defining rafting on the Kinzig. In the mid-1980s the guild saved the listed railway gatekeeper's house on the Black Forest Railway from demolition, bought it from the town in 1987 and restored it, in consultation with the monument preservation authority, largely through its own labor.
On June 1, 1991 the house opened as a rafting and transport museum. It is located where river, railway line and road meet at the Kinzig bridge, and accordingly was devoted to rafting, the forestry trades and transport. It is run by a private foundation that manages without public subsidies.
Meanwhile the Fördergemeinschaft Wald-Holz & Flößer Vorderes Kinzigtal runs the museum under the name Wald-, Holz- und Flößermuseum (Forest, Timber and Rafting Museum). In summer 2026 the new permanent exhibition "Waldgeschichten und Holzsachen" was opened; raft models, tools and documents continue to tell of the hard daily life of the rafters and their families.
