About the museum
The museum opened in 1991 and goes back to Gaby Spitzmüller, who was later made an honorary citizen of Nordrach. She founded and ran the museum and made a large part of the dolls on display herself; she gathered further pieces as a collector. Today the museum belongs to the municipality of Nordrach.
Over two floors, more than 3,500 dolls and teddy bears can be seen. The special feature is the staging in thematic showcases: they recreate snapshots from life in the Black Forest village, such as a traditional costume wedding, a school class, a children's choir, the Kirchweih (church festival), a christening procession, timber rafters (Flößer), a chicken yard, and farm work through the year.
The exhibition also recalls emigration to America in 1851 and 1852, shows a circus scene and presents works by other doll artists such as Rolanda Heimer and Astrid Badina. The building is painted in bright colors.
