About the museum
For centuries, rafters from Steinmauern floated sought-after Black Forest timber down the Rhine as far as Holland. The wood was needed, among other things, for countless sailing ships; rafting brought the village prosperity and a reputation beyond the region.
The Flößereimuseum (rafting museum) offered insight into the everyday life of the rafters, their techniques and tools, through numerous models and an outdoor area. It was housed on the top floor of the town hall, was run by an association, and was open on the first Sunday of every month from February to December, 14:00–17:00. It is part of the German-French PAMINA Rhine Park.
Because of the renovation and conversion of the town hall, the museum had to make way and is temporarily closed. The municipality has acquired the property at Hauptstraße 81, where a new Flößereimuseum is to be created, with modern design, interactive stations and media, as well as a space for gatherings and events.
