About the museum

The roots go back to the 1970s, when employees of a subsidiary of Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm built an airworthy Bf 109 from a Spanish licensed production, intended to commemorate Willy Messerschmitt at air shows. More vintage aircraft were added, and by the mid-1990s there was no more room.

The Messerschmitt Foundation, co-founded in 1969 by the aircraft designer himself, and the then DASA – today Airbus – therefore decided on a hangar of their own. For Messerschmitt's 100th birthday it was opened on June 26, 1998 on the factory grounds in Manching, directly next to the Ingolstadt/Manching air base.

The museum's aim is to keep as many machines as possible airworthy and to show them regularly at flying events; a glass workshop is therefore part of the concept. The collection includes a replica of the M 17, two Bf 108 "Taifun," several variants of the Bf 109, a replica of the Me 163 rocket fighter as a glider, an airworthy replica of the Me 262 as well as the jet aircraft HA 200 and HA 300 developed in Spain. A KR 200 cabin scooter recalls Messerschmitt's postwar products. Because the museum is located on a secured company site, it is only accessible on registered guided tours.
