About the museum
The museum is on the ground floor of the Schweizerhaus, a half-timbered house in Swiss style from the mid-19th century. It lies directly above the main entrance of the Forest Botanic Garden when coming from Tharandt. The garden itself was laid out in 1811 by Heinrich Cotta and Adam Reum and is one of the oldest woody plant collections in the world; today it belongs to the Technische Universität Dresden (Dresden University of Technology).
In 1885, a forest botany museum was set up in the Schweizerhaus to display the scientific collections that had accumulated over the years. Since the redesign in 1995, the exhibition has been divided into three areas: the history of the garden; the garden as a site for plants and as a habitat for animals and plants; and growth anomalies, which make it especially easy to explain to children how flexibly plants respond to their environment.
The Forstgartenshop (forest garden shop) is also located in the same house.
