About the museum

The Frankenstudio goes back to Dr. Andreas Pampuch, who, as district heritage officer for Lower Franconia and lecturer in regional studies and folklore at the Pädagogische Hochschule Würzburg, spent decades gathering material on Franconian local history. His collection was intended above all to bring regional studies and folklore closer to young people.

After Sickershausen was incorporated into Kitzingen on January 1, 1975, the Kitzingen town council made the upper floor of the vacated town hall available for the collection a few weeks later. The building dates from 1592. After about two years of setup work, carried out by many helpers, the Frankenstudio was opened to the public in February 1977. It has been run by volunteers ever since; since 2023 Leonhard Pirkl has headed the house.

The holdings include an archive with more than 200 examination papers and more than 700 seminar papers on Franconian topics, a local history library of about 2,000 volumes whose books can be borrowed free of charge, and an extensive photo and slide archive. In the former council chamber and in the corridors, folk art made of ceramics, wax, enamel, metal and textiles is on display, along with teaching collections on geology, minerals, fossils and the prehistory and early history around the Schwanberg.
