Conditorei-Museum
Private museum on the history of the confectioner's and gingerbread baker's trade, housed in a Renaissance half-timbered house on Kitzingen's market square.
About the museum
The Conditorei-Museum opened in 1996 in a half-timbered house on Kitzingen's market square. Its foundation is an extraordinary discovery: in the attic of the house, the furnishings, molds, and documents of the former gingerbread bakers and confectioners had survived, and in the early 1980s they were examined and inventoried by folklorists from the University of Würzburg.
The so-called Poganietz-Haus was built in 1556 and is among the oldest townhouses in the city; its Renaissance decorative half-timbered facade defines the market square. Gingerbread was baked here from 1722, and from 1833 a confectioner ran a sugar bakery in the house, which continued under changing owners until 1937. The building has been owned by the Schmitt-Poganietz family since 1892.
For the museum, the former living quarters on the third and fourth floors were restored, uncovering old wooden and stucco ceilings. On display are, among other things, numerous wooden molds for figure-shaped baked goods, many of them from the 18th century, along with molds and equipment from the confectioner's trade. The collection was expanded through acquisitions from all over Germany, of which only a part is shown in Kitzingen. There is also a specialist library with an archive of around 1,750 titles, which is available for research on request.
