About the museum

The Segeum Museum is housed in the Old School of Segnitz am Main and belongs to the municipality. It is dedicated to burial culture in the southern Maindreieck region: excavations in the village uncovered important burial grounds, including those at the "Kleiner Anger" and on Merowingerstrasse.

The permanent exhibition shows grave goods, ceramics in unusual shapes, weapons and jewellery, as well as a photo documentation of the Segnitz burial grounds. The finds date from the Bell Beaker culture, the Bronze Age and Urnfield period, the Hallstatt period and the Merovingian period. Staged excavation features show how burial customs changed from the Neolithic to the early Middle Ages.

The film "Auf dem Weg ins Jenseits" tells the story of this change, and a small companion booklet is available on the burial ground at the Kleiner Anger. A replica of a burial mound can be seen in the museum courtyard.
