About the museum

The idea for a Frankfurt museum of contemporary art dates back to the era of Hilmar Hoffmann, the city’s head of cultural affairs, who reshaped Frankfurt’s cultural landscape. The museum was founded in 1981; around the same time, the city acquired large parts of the collection of Darmstadt industrialist Karl Ströher, whose American Pop Art and Minimal Art formed the core of the holdings. Until the opening, the critic Peter Iden ran the institution on an interim basis.

In 1983 the Viennese architect Hans Hollein was commissioned to design a building for the triangular vacant lot on Domstraße. Because of its shape, his postmodern building is popularly known as the “Tortenstück” (slice of cake); it arranges some 30 exhibition rooms of different shapes around a top-lit central hall. The museum opened in June 1991 under founding director Jean-Christophe Ammann; he was followed by Udo Kittelmann (2002–2008), Susanne Gaensheimer (2009–2017) and, from 2018, Susanne Pfeffer.

Since 2007 the MMK has used the former main customs office diagonally across the street, a 1927 building of the Neues Frankfurt movement, as a second venue; among other things, it presents the Ponto Prize for young art. In 2014 around 2,000 square meters of exhibition space in the TaunusTurm in the banking district were added. The collection now comprises more than 5,000 works and continues to grow thanks to foundations, the friends’ association and Frankfurt companies.

In October 2024 work began on the final phase of an extensive fire-safety renovation of the listed main building, which is scheduled to be completed during 2026. Until then, the museum is showing its exhibitions at ZOLLAMT MMK and TOWER MMK.
