Marking the Czech Republic as guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the show presents experimental children’s books and prototypes – from pop-up worlds and paper architecture to books for drawing in and solving puzzles.
Collages in which Heiner Meermeyer places Hoffmann’s characters in new pictorial worlds, complemented by Hoffmann’s own glued-paper pictures and a station for creating your own; on view until further notice.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1977 as the Heinrich-Hoffmann- und Struwwelpeter-Museum and for decades was housed in a villa on Schubertstraße in the Westend district. The core of the collection is the estate of the Frankfurt physician Heinrich Hoffmann (1809–1894), who in 1844 drew and wrote the Struwwelpeter picture book for his son.
In September 2019 the museum moved into Frankfurt’s rebuilt Neue Altstadt (new old town): since then it has occupied two reconstructed houses in the lane Hinter dem Lämmchen, including the Haus zum Esslinger, not far from the cathedral and the Römer. The redesigned exhibition received the German Design Award in 2022.
The permanent exhibition presents Hoffmann as a reformer of psychiatry, a politically engaged citizen, a poet and a family man, and traces the worldwide impact of his picture book through rare editions, translations, parodies and art objects. For children there are story islands, a play trail and a theater room with costumes. Changing special exhibitions focus on cultural history and picture-book art.
The museum is run by a non-profit subsidiary of the frankfurter werkgemeinschaft, an association that supports people with mental illness and disabilities. The museum operates as an inclusive business, continuing Hoffmann’s commitment to his patients; a circle of friends has supported it since 1995.
