How country people decorated their walls without expensive wallpaper, using pattern rollers and stencils – with historic objects, hands-on stations and modern art.
Photorealistic pencil drawings of insects, spiders and other small creatures, juxtaposed with doors, tools and other human-made objects.
About the museum
The museum's origins lie in the Edelmannshof in Perschen, a three-sided farmstead preserved largely unchanged since 1605, next to a Romanesque church with a charnel house. The association Verein Oberpfälzisches Bauernmuseum Perschen acquired the farm in 1961 and opened a farm museum there in 1964 featuring furniture, traditional costumes, tools and household goods.
The large numbers of visitors soon overwhelmed the volunteer-run association. In 1977 the Bezirk Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate district) took over the museum with the aim of building a large open-air museum and developed a site near Neusath above the Naab river for this purpose. Since 2020 the institution has been called Freilandmuseum Oberpfalz.
Today around 50 buildings that were dismantled at their original locations and re-erected here stand in Neusath, arranged in the building groups Stiftland, Oberpfälzer Wald, Oberpfälzer Jura, Mühlental and Nabburger Straße. Together they reflect the rural architecture of the entire Upper Palatinate in miniature. Museum animals, farm gardens, historic crop plants, a central storage facility with around 40,000 objects and an environmental education center with an extensive program of courses and workshops round out the museum. The Edelmannshof in Perschen remains part of it as a second site.
