About the museum

The Zehentstadel on the Spitalhof served from 1547 as a granary for the grain that farmers delivered as dues to the Nabburg hospital foundation. From 1585 the brewmaster of the neighboring white beer brewery also lived here. From 1840 the building was only a barn with a vaulted cellar, and over the decades it fell increasingly into disrepair.

The idea of a town museum emerged in the late 1990s; a culture and museum association was founded to support the town in setting up and running it. From the end of 1999 the building, which was at risk of collapse, was renovated; the topping-out ceremony took place in June 2000, and by early 2003 the restoration was nearly complete. The house opened with a special exhibition on the two-hundred-year history of the Zinngießerei Schreiner pewter foundry.

In 2005 the natural history section “Von Menschen und Tieren” (Of People and Animals) opened, and in 2009 “Von Menschen und ihrer Stadt” (Of People and Their Town) followed. This completed the town museum. Both sections are aimed primarily at children and young people: animal specimens can be made to “speak” via touchscreens, and town history is told with only a few objects, but with drawings, photos, comics and audio books.
