About the museum
The house at Oberer Markt 4 in Nabburg can be traced back to the middle of the 17th century; around 1650 Hans Pfeiffer appears as its first known owner. From 1845 it belonged to the Schmidt family. The artist Karl Schmidt-Wolfratshausen (1891–1971) moved in 1923 from Upper Bavaria to the home town of his father-in-law, Nabburg, where, alongside his work as a building appraiser, he created a large body of work: painting, sculpture, graphics, printmaking, applied arts and architecture.
After his training in Nuremberg and at the Munich Kunstgewerbeschule under Richard Riemerschmid, he was shaped by the idea of the total work of art. He turned his house into one according to the motto "Carpe diem": wall paintings on the facades, mosaics throughout the house and courtyard, oil paintings, watercolors, self-designed furniture and crafts define the look. So far, around 10,000 works on paper and 520 oil paintings have been catalogued.
The Schmidt couple named the city of Nabburg as sole heir to the artistic estate and the household contents. In 1975 the city inherited the property with its furnishings and has preserved it in its original condition ever since. About 30 years after the artist's death, his wish to open the house to the public as a museum was fulfilled.
