About the museum
Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the "Turnvater" (father of gymnastics), was born in Lanz in the Prignitz on August 11, 1778, the son of the village pastor, and was baptized in the neighboring church. The parsonage where he was born burned down on February 23, 1854, and was rebuilt on the same site in 1856.
The memorial was set up in 1978, on Jahn's 200th birthday, in the village's former one-room school. After reunification it was expanded and redesigned. It presents a documentation of the life and work of the man regarded as the founder of the German gymnastics movement.
