About the museum
The museum is run by the association Dampflokfreunde Salzwedel, founded in April 1994 after a member acquired retired steam locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. For almost 18 years the collection was based in Salzwedel.
In 2011 the association moved to the former large Reichsbahn locomotive depot in Wittenberge, which offered better prospects. There the vehicle collection is maintained and restored; visitors can watch the work and learn more about railway technology of earlier times.
The holdings include several steam locomotives, among them Class 50 engines, as well as diesel locomotives, historic carriages and a working signal box from 1909. Steam days, on which vehicles are shown in operation, take place on several dates each year.
