About the museum

The museum opened in Wyk in 1908 to display the collections of a local society devoted to natural and cultural history. A defining figure in its development was Carl Häberlin, a doctor practicing on Föhr and a local historian, after whom the museum is named today. The Hamburg architect Heinrich Bomhoff deliberately modeled the building, with its thatched roof and multi-paned windows, on the island's traditional houses; five extensions have been added since, and the ensemble has been a listed monument since 2022.

The grounds of around 10,000 square meters in the middle of Wyk gradually grew into a small open-air museum: in 1927 Haus Olesen from Alkersum, built in 1617 and the oldest house on Föhr, was moved here. It was joined by a post mill from the Hallig Langeneß, a barn from Midlum, reconstructed prehistoric burial chambers, and whale bones and blue whale jawbone arches at the entrance.

The collection is considered the most extensive cultural history collection of the North Frisian Islands. In the main building, ten rooms cover topics including whaling and seafaring, Föhr costumes and natural history. Since 1995 all of the island's municipalities have jointly run the museum through a special-purpose association. In 2023 the exhibition “Inselleben” (Island Life) about present-day Föhr opened in the renovated Haus Jansen, together with a museum café.
