About the museum
The nature center lies in the dune landscape of Amrum in Norddorf and is run by the association Öömrang Ferian. It also serves as the base for voluntary and professional protected-area management on the island and as a point of contact for nature conservation, environmental education and guided tours. As a National Park House, it conveys knowledge about the Wadden Sea. After a long partnership with the optics company Carl Zeiss, it carried the company's name from 2009 and is today called Naturzentrum Amrum.
The exhibition shows what makes Amrum's nature distinctive and why it deserves protection. A highlight is the skeleton of a sperm whale that belonged to a group of 30 animals stranded in the southern North Sea in 2016; on Amrum it bears the Frisian name Momme. A tide pool and aquariums make the Wadden Sea and its inhabitants tangible. A further exhibition addresses plastic waste and grew out of a project by two federal volunteers that won an environmental competition.
