About the museum

The thatched house on the Honkenswarf terp (artificial mound) was built in 1875 in the Frisian style and is one of the few well-preserved Frisian houses of this kind. In the 1990s it was extensively renovated inside and divided into holiday apartments, named after the former rooms such as Pesel, kitchen and stable.

One room was preserved as the Friesenstube and serves as a small private museum, which according to the family is the only one on the Hallig. The furnishings, including a Bilegger tiled stove, an alcove bed and old Delft wall tiles, as well as all the exhibits, belong to the Johannsen family. On display are everyday and dowry items, decorative objects and jewelry, most of them 200 to 300 years old.

The objects were passed down through generations of ancestors who all went to sea as sailors, mates and captains. Alongside the guesthouse, the family runs a farm shop on the terp and the only dairy farm on the Hallig.
