About the museum
The Pellworm Island Museum has its place on the upper floor of the tourism service building on Uthlandestraße. According to regional cultural portals, it came into being in the early 1990s from objects that had previously been gathered in private collections on the island.
The island history section explains, in ten stations and a timeline column with display cases and drawers, the special features of the region: geological history and landscape change, dike and warf construction, storm surges, the development of houses, church history, wind energy past and present, schooling and children’s lives, the harbor and seafaring, the Vogelkoje (historic bird-catching facility), and the poet Detlev von Liliencron. Original objects, models, and illustrated texts make clear how the sea shaped the islanders’ daily lives.
The folklore section stages scenes from everyday life in the past: a general store and smithy, a kitchen and farm work, along with a doctor’s carriage and a milking installation. Children in particular find things vivid here, because they are allowed to try some of them out themselves.
