Fürstliche Schatzkammer Thurn und Taxis
Branch of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in the Marstall (royal stables) of Schloss St. Emmeram: porcelain, snuffboxes, weapons, and goldsmith work of the Thurn und Taxis family.
About the museum
The Princes of Thurn und Taxis, who grew immensely wealthy as Postmasters General, have resided in Regensburg since 1748 and have lived in the former Benedictine monastery of St. Emmeram since the early 19th century. After the death of Prince Johannes in 1990, the Free State of Bavaria acquired more than 2,200 works of art from the princely holdings in 1993 as part of the inheritance settlement.
Since 1998 the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (Bavarian National Museum) has presented a selection of them as a branch museum in the north wing of the Neoclassical Marstall, built on the palace grounds between 1829 and 1832. The vaulted former stables on the first floor are themselves part of the experience.
On display are furniture, early European porcelain, an important collection of precious snuffboxes, and gold and silver work from leading European workshops of the 17th to 19th centuries. Period rooms such as a Rococo boudoir and a fully furnished Biedermeier salon convey the princely family's domestic culture. A special feature is the princely gun room, preserved largely in its authentic state.
The treasury can be visited independently of the guided tours of the palace's state rooms and cloister; tickets and tours are offered by the Fürst Thurn und Taxis Museen on site and online.
