About the museum
The Alte Vikarie was endowed in 1322 by the castle warden Konrad von Batenhorst. The vicar who lived here was responsible for the pilgrimage church Heilig Kreuz; the post was at times filled alternately by the bishop of Münster and by the pope. From 1583 Jesuits lived in the house; the oldest surviving classroom, on the second floor, dates from this period. Badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War, the building was restored and in 1663 extended with stables and a barn with a large gateway.
In the late 1950s the vicarage post was dissolved, and the house passed to the municipality of Stromberg and, after the 1975 municipal reform, to the town of Oelde. After a fire on the upper floor during the night of July 28, 1995, residents of Stromberg rebuilt the half-timbered house in about a year and a half, with more than 10,000 hours of volunteer work; it was dedicated on August 8, 1998. Since then a sponsoring association has looked after the house.
Today the Alte Vikarie serves as a local heritage house (Heimathaus), meeting place and home of the Heimatverein (local heritage association). The association runs a village archive with books, maps, postcards, photographs and funeral cards, and on the upper floor a small museum on the history of the burgraves of Stromberg.
