About the museum

The Höhlenmuseum in Frasdorf documents the karst landscape around the Laubenstein between Hochries, Spitzstein and Laubenstein in the western Chiemgau Alps. The area holds two large caves and many smaller ones, as well as dolines, swallow holes (ponors), karren fields and the Grubalm polje. Frasdorf and Munich cave researchers have explored the area since the 1920s; the museum, officially opened in 1997, makes their findings available to the public.

The museum displays photos, plans, models, cave finds and videos. Topics range from geology and cave research to flora and fauna, cave rescue, environmental protection and alpine pasture farming. One of the best-known exhibits is a brown bear skull around 11,000 years old, found in one of the caves around 1930, which was named one of the "100 Heimatschätze Bayerns" (Bavarian local heritage treasures) in 2018.

In the same building, the village museum tells milestones of local history: the mysterious life of the Frasdorf "Wassertrinkerin" (water drinker), Wildenwart Castle as a refuge of the last Bavarian king, the construction of the autobahn before the war, the Rosenheim–Frasdorf local railway, folk music advocate Wastl Fanderl and the beginnings of winter tourism. The museum is run by volunteers from the Heimat- und Kulturverein Frasdorf (local heritage and culture association).
