About the museum

A small local history museum had existed in Oftersheim since 1977, in the former stable building of a Franconian four-sided farmstead. After extensive renovation, the Gemeinde- und Forstmuseum opened on April 30, 1986; since May 1, 1986, the neighboring farm with the forestry section has also been part of it. The museum is run by the Heimat- und Kulturkreis, founded in 1983, whose members have built out the exhibition rooms across three floors and repeatedly expanded them on a volunteer basis.

On around 520 square meters, the museum shows village history, work on the farm and in the fields, domestic life around 1900, rural crafts, and forestry. In 2014 a farmhouse apartment from around 1930, with a saddler's workshop, was added; in 2018, a Roman section on the Roman villa rustica, whose remains were discovered in Oftersheim in the 1960s. The permanent exhibition on local history was redesigned in 2022, and in 2023 a schoolroom in the style of the 1930s followed.
