About the museum

The farmstead at Schwetzinger Straße 17 was built in 1819 and was due to be demolished in 1988. The Heimat- und Kulturkreis Plankstadt (local heritage and culture circle), which had campaigned for a local history museum, received the house from the municipality and restored it through voluntary work between 1988 and 1997. The museum opened in 1997; since 2010 it has undergone extensive further restoration.

The exposed and partly restored wall paintings are especially distinctive. The period furnishings show the comfortable living conditions in a farming milieu. The focus is on the lives of workers who commuted between home and workplace, and of part-time farmers in the period before World War II; exhibits from farming, crafts and school life convey the everyday life of the past century.

The association supplements the museum with guided tours, lectures, action days and an annual museum festival. A virtual 360-degree exhibition is available online.
