About the museum

The XYLON Museum was founded in 1987 by the painter and graphic artist Otto Mindhoff as "xylon – Museum + Werkstätten e. V.". He wanted to present printmaking not only as an exhibition, but also to convey and pass on printmaking as a living practice.

The building lies in the northern part of the Schwetzingen palace garden, opposite the Orangery. Its spacious, bright rooms were built as an Invalids' Barracks in 1774/75 by Nicolas de Pigage, court architect of the Electorate of the Palatinate.

Since then, XYLON has shown changing exhibitions with a particular focus on contemporary printmaking, especially artistic relief printing with woodcut and linocut. The program combines exhibitions, projects and educational offerings; in the workshop, techniques and working processes can be experienced hands-on. To this day the museum is carried by the non-profit association, which depends on commitment, cooperation and support.
