About the museum
The museum has been housed in Sandhausen's old town hall, built in 1742, since it opened in 1977. It stands on Lège-Cap-Ferret-Platz next to the Hopfenbrunnen (hops fountain) with the bronze figures "Spargelfrau" (asparagus woman) and "Schindelmacher" (shingle maker). It is run by the Verkehrs- und Heimatverein Sandhausen 1952 (transport and local heritage association).
The history of the village is told in seven rooms. On the first floor are pottery shards from several periods, along with information on the natural and dune landscape and old and new photographs. The second floor shows agricultural tools, household items and objects from rural and craft life, as well as a furnished old living room with kitchen. Further themes include former trades, hop growing and cigar making.
