About the museum
The foundation was laid by the Greifswald geologist Otto Jaekel, who opened the Pomeranian Geological State Collection in 1908, creating for the first time a permanent exhibition for a broad public. It is part of the geological and paleontological collections of the university, whose origins go back to a mineral cabinet mentioned in 1777.
After several moves, the state collection opened in 1973 at its present location on Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Straße. In 1968, as part of the GDR university reform, parts of the Rostock State Geological Collection and its drill core archive were brought to Greifswald, which is why the collection today stands for all of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The exhibition focuses on the geological development of Northern Europe. On display are one of the most extensive glacial erratic exhibitions in Germany, the oldest rocks of the state from deep drillings, and fossils, for example from the Rügen Chalk and the Liastongrube (Lias clay pit) near Grimmen. It serves university teaching and adult education and is regularly visited by school classes. During university open days such as the Tag der offenen Tür (open house day), it is open to the public.
