About the museum
The museum harbor grew out of a working group on fishing traditions within the Kulturbund of the GDR. Attempts to found it during the GDR period failed, but as early as 1988 a first gathering of old ships took place in Greifswald; as the Gaffelrigg, it still takes place every year.
After 1990 the old town harbor was abandoned as a cargo-handling site, so it could be given a new use. On February 23, 1991, the association Museumshafen Greifswald e. V. was founded. The city gave it the roughly 500-meter-long southern harbor side, which the association developed into a promenade with power and water connections. Since 1998 it has been based in the listed Fangenturm tower.
From an initial six ships, around 50 historic vessels have grown, including Zeesboats, former fishing cutters, loggers, tugboats, and classic sailing yachts. Many are restored by members. The harbor is considered the largest museum harbor in Germany; the Museumswerft (museum shipyard) is nearby.
