About the museum
The Pommersches Landesmuseum is a young institution with old collections. The University and the Hanseatic City of Greifswald took up the idea of a state museum for Pomerania on the Greifswalder Bodden; the city contributed buildings and its municipal collections, the university its most valuable art treasures, and the federal government and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern supported the project. The Stiftung Pommersches Landesmuseum was founded in 1996.
The site has a long history: in 1262, Franciscans founded the “Graue Kloster” (Grey Friary) here. After the Reformation, the town school and poorhouse moved into the buildings; the neoclassical Quistorpbau was built in 1793–97, and from 1929 to 1999 the monastery library and convent building housed the municipal museum. From 1998, the architects Sunder-Plassmann renovated and expanded the ensemble; the painting gallery opened in 2000, and the entire museum on June 4, 2005, with the glass Museumsstraße as a connecting element.
The core holdings consist of the Stettin painting collection, most of which had been evacuated to Coburg in 1945, the holdings of the Kiel-based Stiftung Pommern, and the collection of the Greifswald municipal museum – around 60,000 objects in total. In addition, there are loans from Germany, Sweden, and Poland, including the University of Greifswald’s Croy Tapestry.
The regional history exhibition was expanded in 2010 and 2021. In December 2025, the Galerie der Romantik (Gallery of Romanticism) opened, centered on Greifswald-born Caspar David Friedrich; its upper floor, with works from Frans Hals to Vincent van Gogh, follows in November 2026. The museum works closely with the National Museum in Szczecin and other Polish and Scandinavian partners.
