About the museum
The theologian Gustaf Dalman (1855–1941) headed the Deutsche Evangelische Institut für Altertumswissenschaft des Heiligen Landes (German Evangelical Institute for the Archaeology of the Holy Land) in Jerusalem from 1902. World War I kept him in Germany; in 1917 he continued his work in Greifswald and brought along part of his Jerusalem collection.
After a university support association provided funds, the ministry approved in 1920 the Institut für biblische Landes- und Altertumskunde (Institute for Biblical Regional and Antiquities Studies), which was named after its founder in 1925. When Dalman moved to Herrnhut in 1940, the Gustaf-Dalman-Stiftung, founded in 1925, acquired the collection and the library.
The holdings document Palestine's rural and nomadic character as it can no longer be experienced today: household and farm tools, ceramics, small archaeological finds, rock and plant specimens, a herbarium of about 2,000 sheets, around 600 land, roll and relief maps, about 20,000 historical photographs, and a library of about 5,000 volumes. The collection is incorporated into theological teaching, is continuously being digitized, and is opened to interested visitors at events and guided tours.
