About the museum

The Bornaer Museum was founded in 1935 and moved its collection several times within the town. Since 1974, it has been housed in the Reichstor, the last surviving town gate of Borna, and in the adjoining buildings. The gate was built in 1723 in a plain Baroque form on the site of an earlier building and once served as a citizens' and fire watch with detention cells.

The exhibitions combine the functions of the gatehouse with regional themes: in the gate, rooms tell of medieval jurisdiction and of the Karabinier Regiment known as the “Blauen Reiter” (“Blue Riders”); the watchman's room (Türmerstube) lies at the top. In an extension built onto the town wall in 1980/81, the display on lignite mining in the Borna area features a reconstructed deep-mine tunnel from around 1870.

Further focal points are musical instrument making in Borna (organs by Kreutzbach, harmoniums by Lindholm), prehistory and early history, and the Reformation period. The museum is supported by the Kulturraum Leipziger Raum and is currently closed for conversion and renovation work.
