Töpfermuseum Kohren-Sahlis
Pottery museum in a half-timbered house from 1763 in Kohren-Sahlis with an originally preserved potter's room and ceramics from five centuries.
About the museum
Kohren-Sahlis in the south of the Leipziger Land was a pottery town for centuries; the local potters' guild was founded as early as 1656. The museum commemorates this craft in one of the oldest and most beautiful half-timbered houses in the little town.
The Baroque building with a half-hipped roof and half-timbered upper floor dates from 1763; above the portal, a potter's mark points to its original use. Pottery was made here until 1957, after which residents of the town campaigned to preserve the house as a museum. The pottery museum opened its doors in 1961.
The core of the exhibition is the preserved potter's room, in which the potter's family both lived and worked. There are also tools, work materials and ceramics from the 16th to the 20th century as well as relics of the guild such as its chest, banner, archival records and pewter tableware. The building is also the administrative seat of the Kohrener Museen of the town of Frohburg and regularly shows works by regional artists and craftspeople.
