About the museum

The origins of the Frohburg local museum go back to the early 20th century: in 1901 the town called for donations to its collection, and in 1921 the local museum opened in the "Alte Farbe," where, in its first section, the art potter Kurt Feuerriegel showed the development of pottery. A foundation established by the last owner of the castle had provided for the museum to be set up.

In 1974/75, the museum moved into the castle, which originated as a Romanesque fortress around 1200 and was expanded over the centuries into the present complex. Building research documents continuous construction from the Romanesque to the Neoclassical period; the late Neoclassical room decorations in particular are among the most important in Saxony.

Today the building displays Feuerriegel's art ceramics, an exhibition of historical toys, the Stone Hall and Picture Hall, and several areas that present residential and building culture over some 800 years, including the Romanesque cellar vault and the Baroque staircase.
