About the museum
With its forests, sand, clear water and potash-bearing plants, the Warndt offered ideal conditions for glassmaking. According to the sponsoring association, 23 sites of former glassworks are known; the first Saarland glassworks began operating in Ludweiler in 1616.
The museum is housed in the listed former mayor's office of Ludweiler. On the second floor, the permanent exhibition "Glas auf den Tisch" shows set tables from 1900 to 1950 in twelve scenes, placing glass in the everyday life of earlier generations. The display depot in the attic presents utility glass from 1880 to 1939, including products of the Fenne glassworks.
The museum is run by the Heimatkundlicher Verein Warndt (Warndt Local History Association), which also maintains archives and a genealogy office. A museum shop offers books on glass and regional history as well as glass objects.
