About the museum
The museum's origins lie in the postwar period: in 1945, the French occupying forces demanded the construction of a shower bath, and the municipality found a small room for it on the upper floor of the old school. This room also became the first exhibition room of a local history museum.
In the following years, the municipality restored an old barn in the Sackgasse (dead-end lane), including the collapsed cross vault of a cow shed. At the end of 1988 it bought the neighboring barn, renewed the roof and linked the two buildings with an opening. After completion, the Heimat- und Kulturverein Undenheim (local heritage and culture association) was founded, which since then has also run the museum alongside the preservation of customs.
For the village's 1250th anniversary celebrations, the exhibition was thoroughly revised; in the rear part of the barn, the farmhouse room was created with everyday objects donated by Undenheim families. The two vaulted cow sheds are considered the only ones in Rheinhessen in public ownership. The house also serves as a wedding venue and hosts cultural events.
