About the museum
When workers extended the Coburg administrative building in 1988, they came upon old foundation walls. In 1979, the city council had decided to let the former Ratsschule (council school) at the Kirchhof make way for a new building. During the excavations that followed, students from the Gymnasium Albertinum and from the Hochschule Coburg took part and mapped the finds.
The walls belonged to the provostry of the Benedictine order, an administrative building from the mid-13th century, around which a small church district developed. Also uncovered were the cemetery of St. Moriz with graves from the High Middle Ages and the foundations of the provostry chapel, which was demolished in 1827. Parts of the medieval city fortifications also came to light.
To preserve these remains, the city council decided to establish the museum, which opened on April 6, 1994. It shows the building history and excavation documentation of the eastern Kirchhof, a reconstruction drawing of the complex, and finds such as pottery, toys, household items, jewelry and coins from the Middle Ages and the early modern period.
