About the museum
The Heimatstuben (local history rooms) are housed in a two-story brick building that was inaugurated as a school in 1907. In 1994 the municipality made several rooms available for the setting up of a local history room.
The presentation is divided into three themes: the culture and way of life of the village population from the 19th to the 20th century, the development of the village under the influence of military airfield use, and the school history of the village, which spans almost 300 years. The name Thumann is connected with that school history: Friedrich Paul Thumann, born in Groß Schacksdorf in 1834 and died in Berlin in 1908, was the son of the first village teacher trained at a teachers' seminary, became one of the most popular painters of his time, and at times taught in the village himself.
Other notable people from the village include Christoph Gabriel Fabricius (1684–1757), author of Sorbian theological writings, and Paul Vogel, who wrote a textbook on pond fish farming and lived in the castle from 1920 until the early 1930s.
