About the museum
The Denghoog is one of the best-preserved megalithic tombs in Northern Europe and is dated to the Funnel Beaker culture, between about 3200 and 2800 BC. The name comes from Sölring, the Sylt Frisian language, and roughly means "assembly hill" – a hint that the mound may later also have served as a meeting place.
Beneath the earth mound lies an oval chamber formed by twelve supporting stones and three capstones; the heaviest stones weigh up to 18 tons. A passage about six meters long leads into the interior. The Hamburg geologist Ferdinand Wibel examined the tomb in September 1868; since the 1930s the chamber has been open to visitors. A re-examination in 1982 found bone fragments, vessels, stone tools and amber beads.
The original finds are in the Archäologisches Landesmuseum (State Archaeological Museum) at Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig; copies are shown by the Sylt Museum in Keitum. The Denghoog is looked after by the Sölring Foriining, which runs it together with the Sylt Museum, the Altfriesisches Haus and the Naturpfad Vogelkoje as the Sölring Museen. Those who prefer not to go inside can also explore the chamber virtually in a 3D tour.
