About the museum
A Vogelkoje (duck decoy) is a facility for catching wild ducks. Kampen’s Vogelkoje goes back to Sylt’s first duck-trapping installation, for which the Kampen skipper Johann von der Heide received a royal Danish permit in 1767. For decades large numbers of ducks were caught here; operation ended only in the early 20th century.
In 1935 the site was placed under nature protection. Today it is looked after by the association Sölring Foriining, which has developed it into a natural idyll with an educational trail. Parts of the historic trapping installation, including two decoy huts and a decoy pipe, were reconstructed true to the original in the 1980s.
The exhibitions in the houses “Natur” and “Kultur” explain how a decoy works and the nature of the site, without showing the actual trapping, which makes them suitable for children. The nature trail belongs to the Sölring Museen, which operate four facilities on Sylt.
