About the museum

In the west of Wald-Michelbach in the Odenwald, manganese ore bound to Zechstein dolomite rock was mined between 1889 and 1918. Mainly soft and hard manganese ore was extracted via several shafts and adits; the mine was operated in turn by mining companies from Siegen. The ore was cleaned on site and transported by a steam-driven cable car to the Unter-Wald-Michelbach station. Why operations ended is not recorded.

After closure, the adit served as an air-raid shelter in the Second World War, later as storage for potatoes and cider, and at times even as a rubbish dump. Local history enthusiasts made Stollen I accessible again; it opened as a show mine in February 1993. Of its length of around 110 metres, about 85 metres are accessible, with a height of 1.70 to 2 metres and temperatures of around 8 to 11 degrees.

The municipality of Wald-Michelbach regards the mine as an important industrial monument from the heyday of mining in the Überwald. Visits are possible during the season from April to October by registration via the Zukunftsoffensive Überwald.
