About the museum
The poet Gustav Schwab was a pastor in Gomaringen from 1837 to 1841 and lived during that time in the palace, which served as a parsonage until 1993. Here he received friends such as Ludwig Uhland and Justinus Kerner, published his travel descriptions of Swabia and worked on the "Sagen des klassischen Altertums" (Legends of Classical Antiquity). After the municipality acquired the palace, which was in need of renovation, from the state in 1994, the Geschichts- und Altertumsverein (History and Antiquities Society), founded in 1988, set up a museum there, which it has run on a voluntary basis since 1998.
The first Schwab exhibition was created in 1998 with the support of the Arbeitsstelle für literarische Museen (Office for Literary Museums) in Marbach. In 2012, female students of the Ludwig-Uhland-Institut in Tübingen redesigned the presentation in Schwab's former living quarters in the south wing: a large map of Württemberg with a touchscreen invites visitors to follow Schwab's walks, while the former kitchen, under the title "Schwabs Hellas", shows his resonance in the present day.
On the mezzanine, the oldest part of the palace, dating from the 14th century and with remains of wall paintings, there is a local history exhibition on life and work in Gomaringen in the 18th and 19th centuries – with a loom, a smithy and tools of shoemakers, wheelwrights and saddlers. In 2002 the museum was honoured as an exemplary local history museum in the Tübingen administrative district. Temporary exhibitions and palace tours complement the offering.
